Kombucha tea has become exceedingly trendy lately amongst the healthfully conscious, and stars such as Lindsay Lohan and Madonna have even been spotted sipping on the tea. But is it really the magical cure-all it claims to be?

The beverage has been around for more than 2,000 years; in fact, the ancient Chinese called Kombucha the ?Immortal Health Elixir.? Kombucha is a colony of bacteria and yeast, which is then added to sugar and tea and allowed to ferment in order to produce what is known as Kombucha tea. The tea is available commercially and can also be made at home.

Advocates of the brew claim that Kombucha detoxifies the body, increases energy, sharpens eyesight, aids joint recovery, improves skin elasticity, aids digestion and even prevents and fights cancer and arthritis. There is little published research done on the benefits.

As of yet there have not been any published case-controlled studies and no specific links have been established in relation to effect of central nervous system, liver, metabolic acidosis, and toxicity in general.

Several cases of harm have been reported, however, with symptoms including upset stomach, infections and allergic reactions. Some sources have even indirectly linked death to Kombucha.

Adverse reactions may be due to unsanitary fermentation conditions, leaching compounds from the fermentation vessels, or ?sickly? kombucha cultures that cannot acidify the brew. The acidity of the fermented drink is what prevents the growth of unwanted contaminants.

Since home-brewing facilities vary a great deal, the tea can easily become contaminated with harmful germs. Home-brewed tea should not be brewed in ceramic, lead crystal or painted containers, as the acidity of the beverage can cause it to absorb harmful elements from the container.

All in all, there is no solid evidence that Kombucha delivers on its health claims, and given that several cases of harm have been reported, it might be best to avoid it until further research has been done. Since potential health risks are unknown, anyone with an immune deficiency or other medical condition should consult physician before drinking the tea. Women who are pregnant or breast feeding should also avoid Kombucha.

We do not know how to address this with government policies, even though the nation has worried about it for almost 50 years.

To act like family breakdown is Obama's fault, as Santorum often does, is both wrong and unhelpful. He has offered no policy that might help, and I think cutting taxes on the rich, his main economic plank, would only further increase inequality and the social resentments that spring from it, making things worse for poor Americans.

'Colbert Report' to return Monday after absence (omg!)

NEW YORK (AP) ? A representative for Stephen Colbert says "The Colbert Report" will return Monday after a sudden break due to the ailing health of the star's mother.

The Comedy Central show last week substituted repeats for scheduled shows on Wednesday and Thursday. At the time, the network said only that the cancellations were because of "unforeseen circumstances."

Colbert is expected to address his absence on Monday. His 91-year-old mother, Lorna Colbert, is ill.

Earlier on Twitter, Colbert thanked those who had offered "thoughts and prayers."

Obama's new budget calls for the Buffett Rule, which is a tax on millionaires.

Say goodbye to the much-loathed Alternative Minimum Tax and hello to the Buffett Rule. Sweet relief. The AMT has perplexed taxpayers and agonized accountants for decades. But wait: Are the AMT and the Buffett Rule really so different?

The two take aim at different types of tax avoidance, so the details have little in common.?But the headline is the same: Both were designed to?make sure that wealthy citizens pay their fair share of income tax?without creating a tax monster that somehow reaches down to regular people.?When the AMT came into being in 1969, rich people were avoiding tax through loopholes and legal deductions.?Today, there is less of that. But these days some big earners are manipulating income to look like capital gains, which is taxed at a far lower rate ? and the Buffett Rule is intended to stop that.?Different schemes, different measures.

Incredibly, the flaw that most riles critics of the AMT?that the tax is not indexed to inflation?is also true of the Buffett Rule.

None of this is to say the Buffett Rule has nothing going for it. For one thing, it is simple. The AMT requires certain taxpayers to compute two returns and pay the higher of the two bills. Tax planning may be a nightmare because the AMT and the regular code often contradict. A big mortgage might make sense under the regular code but not if you slip into the AMT zone.

The Buffett Rule eliminates that kind of confusion. From the Obama budget:

?The President is now specifically proposing that ? those making over $1 million should pay no less than 30% of their income in taxes. The Administration will work to ensure that this rule is implemented in a way that is equitable, including not disadvantaging individuals who make large charitable contributions. And he is proposing that the Buffett rule should replace the Alternative Minimum Tax.?

Score one for simplicity. You make $1 million, you pay. Even the $1 million threshold is simple?and it is high enough that it unquestionably qualifies as wealthy no matter where you may live. Still, without indexing the figure to inflation it?s a slam-dunk that some years from now that level of income won?t feel so rich anymore and we?ll be wondering why the IRS is picking on this group of taxpayers.

That?s what went wrong with the AMT. Trigger points for a tax established 43 years ago did not allow for the rising cost of living; the tax gradually encroached on the upper middle class and threatened the middle class as well. Only a series of temporary congressional fixes has stopped the AMT from becoming Everyman?s monster and has staved off certain voter revolt. As Daniel Gross notes in a post on the subject:

?Almost every year, Congress passes a ?patch? that prevents the AMT from ensnaring vastly more people. Had Congress not acted, as the Tax Policy Center points out, in 2012, ?45% of all tax filers with cash income between $75,000 and $100,000 will pay the AMT, up from 0.4% in 2011, when the temporary AMT fix or ?patch? is in place.?

?The Buffett Rule resets the target to an appropriate level, for now. But without an annual inflation adjustment, the same old issues are certain to resurface.

French legislator assailed for anti-gay remarks (AP)

PARIS ? President Nicolas Sarkozy's party said Wednesday it is kicking out a legislator who said gay people hold too much sway in France and downplayed the persecution of gays during World War II.

The comments by lawmaker Christian Vanneste unleashed an outpouring of criticism from left and right, and embarrassed Sarkozy's conservative party just as the unpopular president was expected to announce that he will seek a second term in upcoming elections.

Vanneste looks set to lose his spot in the UMP party and his parliament seat over the remarks.

In a video broadcast on a French website, Vanneste said gays are "at the heart of power" in France, manipulating the media and making humankind "lose its dignity."

He said the media overplays "the famous legend of the deportation of homosexuals" from Nazi-occupied France, saying German gays were sent to concentration camps, but "there was no homosexual deportation in France."

Gay rights groups denounced him and UMP members said he had crossed a line. Vanneste, responding Wednesday to the uproar, said he was being unfairly targeted by a "gay lobby."

UMP chief Jean-Francois Cope said Wednesday that Vanneste would be expelled because of his "deeply shocking and intolerable comments."

The party will finalize the decision at a meeting next week, Cope said. Vanneste could no longer be the UMP's candidate for parliament from his district in northern France in legislative elections in June.

Vanneste has made remarks seen as disparaging to gays in the past, but touched a particularly sensitive chord by referring to World War II.

It was 1995 before France's then-President Jacques Chirac acknowledged the nation's responsibility for the deportation of Jews during the war. Denying the Holocaust is a crime punishable by prison and fines in France, and some critics accused Vanneste of negationism.

Nazi Germany declared homosexuality an aberration that threatened the German race, and thousands of gay men were sent to concentration camps, where few survived.

In France the numbers were much lower, according to the author of a book on deportation of French homosexuals. Mickael Bertrand says on his blog that exact figures are hard to pin down, but that his research found 62 French people were deported for being gay.

Wednesday's uproar puts Sarkozy's party in a tough spot as he seeks to garner support from the far right to bolster his weak chances for his presidential campaign.

Polls put Sarkozy in a distant second behind Socialist candidate Francois Hollande ahead of the April and May elections, with far right candidate Marine Le Pen in a close third.

Sarkozy opposes gay marriage, though recent polls suggest a majority of French voters support it. Vanneste is part of the influential hard-right wing of Sarkozy's party.

"He is speaking of homosexuals like they spoke of Jews in the 1930s, speaking of a kind of lobby that infiltrates the media ... that has no place in the UMP, those are not our values," Emmanuel Blanc, the president of GayLib, a gay rights group affiliated with the UMP, said on France-Info radio.
