President Barack Obama says last week's landing of the Curiosity rover on Mars was an 'amazing' accomplishment. In a call to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, he told NASA scientists to let him know if the craft happens to see any Martians.

"Through your dedicated efforts, Curiosity stuck the landing and captured the imagination and attention of millions of people, not just around the country but people all around the world," President Obama said. "It's really mind-boggling what you've been able to accomplish."

The President thanked the whole science team, specifically naming Charles Elachi,?the director of JPL, Adam Steltzner, lead on Curiosity's entry, descent and landing phase, and other leaders on the project. He also called out another NASA figure who has emerged from the landing as a minor celebrity.

"I understand there's a special?Mohawk guy?that's working on the mission," President Obama said, referring to Bobak Ferdowsi, a Curiosity systems engineer who gained fame for the American flag-themed stars and stripes Mohawk hairdo he sported during the landing. "He's been one of the many stars of the show last Sunday night. I in the past thought about getting a Mohawk myself."

"That's going to be the new fashion at JPL," Elachi responded.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? NASA's newest rover Curiosity has yet to make its first move on Mars, but scientists said Tuesday they are already mapping out possible driving routes to a Martian mountain.

Since landing in Gale Crater near the equator last week, the nuclear-powered rover has been busy getting a head-to-wheel health checkup while parked. It touched down about 5 miles from Mount Sharp where signatures of past water have been spotted at the base.

Its ultimate goal is to scale the lower slopes in search of the chemical building blocks of life to determine whether the environment was favorable for microbial life.

The team is "kind of itching to move at this point," said deputy project scientist Ashwin Vasavada of the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which manages the $2.5 billion mission.

Scientists have been poring over pictures of the landing site snapped by Curiosity and spacecraft circling overhead. The pebble-strewn terrain where the rover landed appeared easy to traverse but the landscape gets more rugged the closer to Mount Sharp.

The team identified half a dozen potential paths through buttes and mesas that are reminiscent of the southwestern United States. Vasavada estimated it'll take a year to make the trip to the mountain driving about the length of a football field a day. Along the way, the six-wheel rover will make pit stops to study interesting rocks and scoop up soil.

Before Curiosity can explore, it has to go through a laborious check of its tools and systems. As the most complex spacecraft sent to Mars, it landed using a novel routine that involved lowering it to the surface by cables.

NASA's Mars rover Curiosity has beamed home high-resolution color photos of its Red Planet landing site, showing terrain strikingly similar to the deserts of the American Southwest.

Curiosity snapped the pictures with its 34-millimeter Mast Camera on Aug. 8 PDT (Aug. 9 EDT), just three days after its daring and dramatic touchdown inside Mars' Gale Crater. Mission scientists pieced the 79 photos into a mosaic, with black boxes indicating hi-res images not yet returned by the rover.

Curiosity had already sent lower-resolution versions of these photos to Earth earlier last week. The full-frame images, relayed while the six-wheeled robot was undergoing a software-update "brain transplant," measure 1,200 by 1,200 pixels, researchers said.

The Mastcam (short for Mast Camera) takes pictures the same way a consumer digital camera does, so the new images depict the Martian surface as it would look to a hypothetical astronaut. (Researchers also created "white-balanced" versions ? which show how the scene would look illuminated by Earth-like sunlight ? for analysis purposes.) [Gallery: Photos of Gale Crater]

The mosaic's constituent photos capture some interesting portions of the 96-mile-wide (154 kilometers) Gale Crater. For example, one shows a section of the crater wall north of Curiosity's landing site, where a system of valleys enters Gale from the outside.

Scientists think these valleys were carved by flowing water, making this perhaps the first view of an ancient river system ever taken from the Martian surface, NASA officials said.

Another portion of the mosaic looks south toward Mount Sharp, the mysterious mountain that rises from Gale's center. At 3.4 miles (5.5 km) high, Mount Sharp is taller than any peak in the continental United States.

In this image, the gravelly terrain near the landing site eventually gives way to a dark dune field, beyond which rise the flanks and foothills of Mount Sharp.

Finally, another section of the mosaic shows gouges blasted out by the rockets on Curiosity's sky crane, which lowered the 1-ton rover to the surface on cables and then flew off to crash-land intentionally about 2,000 feet (600 meters) away.

Bedrock is clearly visible in this image, which is exciting to Curiosity scientists. The rover's main goal is to determine if the Gale Crater area could ever have supported microbial life, and Curiosity will get at this question by studying the rocks and soil of Gale and Mount Sharp for the next two years or more.

Science operations have been shelved temporarily while the mission team conducts the four-day "brain transplant" on Curiosity. The software upgrade, which should be done by Tuesday (Aug. 14), will help the $2.5 billion rover transition from landing to surface mode.

"It's just informational. It's up to the City Council to decide whether to allow more events at the Rose Bowl," said Vince Bertoni, director of the Pasadena Planning Department. "It's not there to make a recommendation whether it's a good or bad idea."

Pasadena law allows the Rose Bowl to host no more than 12 events a year that garner attendance of 20,000 people or more. The City Council would have to amend the ordinance, allowing 25 events, for a pro football team to call the stadium home.

The report found that hosting NFL games would increase traffic and traffic-related noise, and would unavoidably restrict public access to other recreational activities in the Arroyo Seco on game days, such as running, hiking or using the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center.

The report found that traffic could be eased by better control of 22 key intersections, either with traffic control officers taking charge on game days or with lights timed especially for the congestion.

The expected traffic would generate air pollution that exceeds South Coast Air Quality Management Quality thresholds, the report stated. But it would do so only for a short period and release fewer pollutants than a project that operates daily.

Who is Rep. Paul Ryan?

Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wisc., leaves the House Republican Conference meeting, beginning at the Capitol Hill Club on??

Gov. Mitt Romney will announce Saturday morning that he's chosen 42-year-old Paul Ryan to be his running mate. Since 2008, the well-spoken Republican Congressman from Janesville, Wisconsin has emerged as a leading figure on the right and a champion of reduced government spending.

Ryan has earned the admiration of conservatives for the tough, government-slashing budget proposals he's put forward since becoming chairman of the House Budget Committee last year.?But when he first arrived in Washington as a freshman lawmaker in 1999 at only 28 years old, budget shrinking wasn't exactly in style.

Ryan told the New Yorker that he was "miserable" during the George W. Bush years, when a Republican-majority Congress added $5 trillion to the debt in war spending, bank bailout, tax cuts, and other costs. But Ryan also tended to vote with the majority at that time, though he put forward unsuccessful proposals to privatize Social Security and made other budget-shrinking suggestions.

In 2008, he released his "Roadmap for America's Future," which described his sweeping vision for how to make America's main entitlement programs of Medicare, Social Security and Medicaid solvent. The plan made him a hero among conservative circles, and Ryan eventually remade it as his "Path to Prosperity" plan, which President Obama and Democrats have criticized for embracing tax cuts while cutting government programs that help the poor. (It wasn't just Democrats who criticized Ryan. While running for president, Newt Gingrich called Ryan's plan "right wing social engineering," which probably helped kill Gingrich's bid.)

President Obama actually helped raise Ryan's profile on the right by critiquing the Congressman's budget, and just last year, Ryan was?reportedly mulling his own run for president.

Ryan, an Ayn Rand fan, ably articulates a conservative vision for economic growth; a mark that Romney occasionally misses as he dodges the subject of his own personal wealth. "I think [Obama] looks at the economy as a fixed pie, and that it's government's role and duty to redistribute the slices in the name of equity versus our belief, which is 'Let's just grow the pie' and have an opportunity in our society for upward mobility ? a society defined by upward mobility, not equal outcomes," he told Esquire magazine last year. "Under our view, we want to make sure people can get the opportunity to make the most of their lives, but that necessarily means that under the kind of economic-freedom system that we have had, you will have different outcomes of people's lives. And that's fine."

Ryan, who spent his early political career working for Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback and the late Republican Congressman Jack Kemp, grew up the fourth child in a Roman Catholic family in Janesville that has lived in the town for five generations. He worked in his family's construction business after earning his degree in economics from Miami University in Ohio. His father died when he was only 16, which prompted soul-searching that led Ryan to discover the works of Rand, who is still a major influence on him. He and his wife, Janna Little, have three children.

Despite budget cuts, NASA officials say they're still doing groundbreaking work, such as the landing on Mars of the rover Curiosity. Chip Reid reports.

The simple explanation for the Red Planet's color is that its regolith, or surface material, contains lots of iron oxide ? the same compound that gives blood and rust their hue. But why does?Mars?have so much iron, why is that iron "oxidized," and why does iron oxide look red?

It all started 4.5 billion years ago. When the solar system formed, many of the planets landed a dose of iron.?Forged in the heart of long-dead stars, the heavy element swirled around in the cloud of gas and dust that gravitationally collapsed to form the sun and planets. Whereas the bulk of Earth's iron sank to its core when the planet was young and molten, NASA scientists think Mars' smaller size (and weaker gravity) allowed it to remain less differentiated. It does have an iron core, but abundant iron exists in its upper layers, also.

Plain-old iron looks shiny black. The element only takes on a reddish tinge when it has been exposed to oxygen, and enough oxygen at that for it to become iron(III) oxide, an atomic fivesome composed of two iron atoms and three oxygen atoms. So why did so much of the iron on Mars' surface oxidize, or gang up with oxygen?

In fact, the jury's still out on that one. For sure, some sort of weathering gradually rusted the iron on Mars. But did the ancient rainstorms that are thought to have occurred on a young, wet Mars rust the iron by pounding the regolith with oxygen atoms freed from?water molecules? Or, did the oxidation happen gradually over billions of years, as sunlight broke down carbon dioxide and other molecules in the atmosphere, producing oxidants such as hydrogen peroxide and ozone? Or, as a group of Danish scientists suggested in 2009, have Martian dust storms slowly rusted the iron, by crumbling the quartz crystals that also exist in the regolith and leaving their oxygen-rich surfaces exposed?

Because no one yet knows the right explanation, the color of Mars is, in a sense, still a mystery. But however its surface rusted, the compound iron(III) oxide appears red because it absorbs the blue and green wavelengths of the light spectrum while reflecting the red wavelengths. The planet's bloody tinge ? visible even from millions of miles away ? got it strapped with the name of the Roman god of war, while other civilizations also named the planet for what was once its main distinguishing feature. The Egyptians called it "Her Desher," meaning "the red one," while ancient Chinese astronomers went with "the fire star."

Afghan-Pakistan talks on Taliban releases: Islamabad

Pakistan and Afghanistan are in talks on the release of a key member of the Taliban, whose 2010 arrest in Pakistan was blamed for sabotaging peace initiatives, a Pakistani foreign ministry official confirmed Friday.

Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, a powerful Taliban military chief who has been described as the militia's second in command, was arrested in Pakistan's port city of Karachi.

The Afghan government and the former UN envoy to Afghanistan said his detention had adversely affected efforts to talk to the insurgents.

"The issue of prisoners is under discussion between the two countries," foreign ministry spokesman Moazzam Ahmad Khan told reporters when asked to comment on Afghan demands for access to Baradar and for his release.

The spokesman did not name any prisoner or give further details, but when asked, confirmed that Baradar was still in Pakistani custody.

Baradar is the most important Taliban leader to be captured since the 2001 US-led invasion ousted the Afghan militia from power in Kabul.

He was known as a trusted aide to the Taliban's elusive leader Mullah Mohammad Omar.

Shortly after Baradar's arrest, the Pentagon said two other Taliban officials were arrested, also understood to have been captured in Pakistan.

In March 2010, Kai Eide, the then just retired UN envoy to Afghanistan, said the arrest of key Taliban in Pakistan had stopped a secret channel of communication between the insurgents and the United Nations.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai has repeatedly invited the Taliban to open direct talks with his government and on Pakistan to facilitate an end to the 10-year war.

Pakistan has said it will do anything required by Kabul to support an Afghan-led peace process, but there is a wide degree of scepticism in Afghanistan and the United States about the sincerity of the former Taliban ally.

SOE has tons of gamers around the world! Every month, we highlight some of the most outstanding and helpful members of the community as the SOE Gamer of the Month. This month in honor of PoxNora?s 6th anniversary we picked someone from that community. We are pleased to introduce DMrBadguy from PoxNora.

Mepps, Community Manger from PoxNora, why has DMrBadguy been chosen as this month?s SOE Gamer of the Month?

Picking a Gamer of the Month from the PoxNora community was an extremely difficult task ? in a good way! The passion and dedication that players bring to PoxNora is outstanding, and there are literally dozens of players worthy of this honor that I could name just off the top of my head. We have players creating database websites, running trading stores, leading guilds, implementing new player programs on the forums and in-game, and a huge number of people that show up day in and day out to contribute to the community and to the game.
While I was searching through all of those people, trying to narrow it down and pick one, I just kept running across constructive, insightful, helpful forum posts from DMrBadguy. It?s great to be able to give nods and thanks to people who go to huge and extraordinary lengths when we can, but I feel it is also important to acknowledge those everyday players that represent the community as whole in the best way. DMrBadguy is just that. He is an easy going community member that contributes regularly to what the PoxNora community does best ? balance discussion and feedback! He is an exemplary everyday Poxer (and maybe his posts just happened to be in all the right spots). Either way, congratulations, DMrBadguy!

Where in the real life world do you live??

Redmond, WA for now.

What SOE Game(s) do you play?

Mainly PoxNora and I also played Dungeon Overlord with a friend back in its beta stage. I don?t know if SOE owns that but I remember you could pay with SC.

How long have you played the above games?

I?ve been playing PoxNora on and off. I started back in 2007 when it was run by Octopi Inc., but I took a break from mid 2008 to late 2010. I was encouraged to get back into the game by Jayaris/Walrussy/Soulfear/PitDragun/FemaleIRL/ForestQueen and I?ve been here ever since. I quit Dungeon Overlord a few months in because it was kind of a time sink and my schedule didn?t let me manage my dungeons efficiently enough. Maybe I?ll go back to it someday, but I?m likely playing Pox until the game dies or my life ends and Claude?s grandchildren are playing PoxNora in space.

What other games do you play?

I?ve got quite the game library, about 300+ games big just physically but half of that is in California with my little brother. I am pretty much into all genres but the only ones I play competitively are strategy and fighting games.

What type of work do you do?

I study at Digipen Institute of Technology located in Redmond, WA, as an amateur game designer and programmer. I also do some editing for Montenegro Editors in Guadalajara, Jalisco in Mexico periodically.

How many hours a week do you play video games?

Mostly depends on my workload for that week or specific day. One day it might be no gaming at all but the next I will only stand up to eat, unload, and brush my teeth. Often, I will play unranked PoxNora matches while I work, watch videos, or read a book so I?d say about 1-2 hours a day on average and 10+ on a slow day.

What does a typical gaming session consist of?

Depends on what I?m playing. If I want some quick games, I?ll usually login into PoxNora and play some ranked games but console games can be a chore due to my humongous backlog and OCD kicking in, telling me to go back and 100% clear something else unless it?s multiplayer.

In the SOE Games you play what do you play? Race/class/Rank/Empire ect?.

I pretty much own all PoxNora runes twice, except for like some troublesome 5 so I play everything. My favorite PoxNora are Moga because they?re very silly looking creatures and I enjoy moving a lot of champion units as to overwhelm my opponents. This makes Skeezick, Imps, Ferren, Zombies, Kanen and other swarmy cheapmeat races my top picks for when I want to play for fun.

What got you into gaming and what sort of games do you like the most??

I got into gaming around the tender age of 5, when my grandpa bought me a Game Boy at the airport along with Super Mario Land. Tetris also came bundled with the Gameboy so I was more excited about the contraption than the trip itself. Been hooked up ever since. I am most fond of turn based strategy games (both digital and tabletop) and my second preferred genre is Hack n Slash/Beat ?em Ups. Runner up would be fighting games but I haven?t had the time to really get into any of the newer titles like UMVC3 though I?m eagerly awaiting the next Guilty Gear title. I also enjoy playing several board games.

What other hobbies or activities do you take part in, other then playing Video Games?

I like to avoid female contact and eat Doritos/drink Mountain Dew in my parent?s basement. That aside, I?m always up for a good read and I enjoy drawing. I?ve taken an interest into writing random short stories recently.

What is your highest level character?

This one doesn?t apply to PoxNora so much, but my player account is level 99 and I?m usually top 100 for what it?s worth.

What do you like the most about your favorite SOE Game?

PoxNora is a fascinating game on a technical level. With over one thousand unique units, 20 different maps and the 30 rune limitation for a game with over 1700 to choose from, the sheer permutations make for quite some replayability. I made it my goal to get all runes as to get rid of limitations and play everything so collecting everything itself was quite the adventure. The community and game?s constant evolution are also a big part of it.

How did you choose your main character?s name??

D can be interpreted as my initial or ?The?. Mr Badguy was Freddie Mercury?s first solo album. That?s about it, really.

What is your favorite lobby?

Ranked Play. It?s fun just to discuss the standing of the game or watch people flip over a loss in real time fresh out of the game. It?s also the best place to be in order to find interesting matches to observe.

What is your favorite NPC??

The captured Boghopper Tad from the Crazed Beasts campaign.

Which lobby do you like the least??

The trading bazaar. As an avid collector, it?s usually a downer to see people ?lf overbid?. Automated trading was a godsend. Shutouts to decondor from PoxBox for the great service he provides to the community!

Which NPC do you like the least??

Anything that demands to be escorted and makes you lose if it dies.

What is the most in-game currency you have ever spent on purchasing a single item for one of your characters??

I paid roughly 270k gold in runes for a Harbinger once.

Do you have an item you no longer use but keep around for nostalgic reasons? If so what is it and why do you keep it??

I like to collect Boghopper Tads and Ambling Fronds. I don?t use them but I wanna have 1000 of each eventually.

Describe your best experience from playing your favorite SOE Game?

It?s hard to tell. The whole PoxNora experience comes from the involvement of the community and how I interact with all these individuals, and what I discover through playing and watching the game evolve over time. I don?t think I?ve ever gotten as much joy from playing (not even when I achieved top 5 or even 1 positions) as I?ve had from seeing my silly ideas influence the game or when I break something on paper and several players get into an argument about how busted it might be. Basically, I enjoy being part of the big dysfunctional family that PoxNora is because at the end of the day, we all care about the game to varying degrees.

You really go above and beyond when you participate on the forums, providing feedback and discussing balance. Can you share about a particular discussion that you were involved in and enjoyed contributing to?

Every ?Cactuar Thread? has been a blast, with thousands of replies that archive the gargantuan effort that goes into balancing PoxNora, and I thank Sokolov for those. It saves up a lot of space in nerfcalling and since he posts stuff that?s under consideration or his long term goals in it, there?s always something interesting to discuss.
