President Marzouki Addresses Concerns Two Years After Revolution

Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki

Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki voiced the concerns of the country?s citizens two years after the revolution in an exclusive interview yesterday with state TV channel and radio Al Wataniya.

According to Marzouki, Tunisians are worried about?the constitutional draft, the date of the upcoming elections, security, high prices, the political will for reform, and even lifestyle.

?Tunisia is divided into two parts: a modernist part and another part which is directing Tunisia towards Taliban-ism. This division is threatening the modernist and moderate Islamic lifestyles,? stated the president.

He sought to reassure Tunisians, ?No one would dare to eliminate modernism and moderate Islam.?

He touched upon the worries of Tunisians concerning the constitutional draft, placing much of the blame on the shoulders of National Constituent Assembly (NCA) representatives.

?The constitution is a priority now in order to get out of the abyss, yet NCA members wasted a large amount of time in judging ministers and in their successive absences,? said Marzouki. ?Determining an election date depends on the constitutional draft. So, this is the?responsibility?of all parties to assume their?responsibilities?and forget about their differences and personal interests.?

The president continued to express concern over the security and economic situation in the country.

?It is high time that the government solve the problem of high prices, which is related to the issue of smuggling, and deal with the phenomena of violence, which are threatening the security and safety of?Tunisians?today,? Marzouki stated.

President Marzouki showed his dismay in the interview to the exclusion of the martyrs? families and injured of the 2008 uprising in southern town of Redeyef from Decree 97, which is meant to compensate those who contributed to the revolution.

?I do favor their inclusion in the decree because I believe that Redeyef is the first area, which started to free Tunisia from dictatorship and tyranny,? Marzouki argued.
