European Union imposes anti-dumping tariff on Chinese products, faces criticism from retailers

RBR Staff Writer Published 16 November 2012

The European Union plans to impose anti-dumping tariffs of up to 67.8% on pipe fittings and ceramic tableware from China and Thailand.

The additional levies will push the prices of the products upwards, with German retailer Metro and Swedish major Ikea amongst the affected importers.

Employed in gas, water and heating systems the products from China were allegedly being sold in the European Union below their actual cost, thereby attracting EU's anti-dumping tariffs.

The British Retail Consortium has in response criticized the move saying it will lead to pointless price rises for hard-pressed customers.

British Retail Consortium director general Stephen Robertson termed it a wrong decision.

"The irony is; making hard-pressed customers pay more will do nothing to support European producers who don't have the capacity to produce enough at low enough prices.

"And, because China mainly supplies the value end of the market, they will deny less well-off customers access to affordable crockery," concluded Robertson
